Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Maximus Ongkili said the move was both strategic and historic as Mimos which is under the Ministry, has opened its first CoE in Sabah after having served the nation for 30 years.
"I am both proud and happy that the centre was launched in less than a year after signing a Memorandum of Understanding last August.
"The smart partnership process with UMS was brought about through the latest state-of-the-art technology, especially in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT)....because ICT is the key machinery to assist the achievement of the roles of SDC," Ongkili told reporters after launching the centre here today.
The CoE would be involved in research and development of semantic technology from Mimos and Intelligent Agent from UMS.
Meanwhile, Mimos chairman Datuk Suriah Abdul Rahman said Sabah is an excellent state to conduct Research and Development (R&D) because of its immense natural resources and its richness in plant diversity combined with its unique geological, topographical, and climatic conditions.
"The UMS' expertise in semantic technology is among the best in the country and similar to activities conducted by Mimos," she said.
Suriah said Mimos had so far joined forces with 19 universities and local research institutions, including UMS while cooperation exist with 22 foreign institutions in Europe, America and Asia Pacific.
"Apart from Universities and research institutions, Mimos are also working closely with multi-national industrial partners like Microsoft, Oracle and SISCO," she said.
